My Hyatt Neighbourhood
Find New Friends and Discover Local Food with Barry
Hello. The name’s Barry. No last name, just Barry. Baz for short if you like.
I’m a koala aged 15 years (that’s 45 human years), originally from Queensland and travelling Australia by paw to sniff out the best kept secrets in Canberra, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney.
The friendly folk at Hyatt have kindly put me up in each city and this suits me just fine! Being a lad of leisure I have come to like the finer things in life with a particular weakness for red wine and dark chocolate. Adding to that, I have a fondness for art. When I see beautiful art I can’t help but wonder where the inspiration came from. In fact, I’ve even done a bit of paw painting myself and find it very therapeutic and relaxing.
I guess I am a bit of a philosopher…a ponderer if you may. I find sunset to be the best time to ponder life and all that is out there in the world. I also find it relaxing to unwind with some gentle jazz music; however, I am looking forward to discovering other music during my travels around Australia. I hear there is something called the Top 40?
As you probably know, us koalas have a bit of a reputation for sleeping a lot. I guess there is some truth to this… I like to get in 18 hours of sleep a day. I snore a lot though, due to my small nostrils… and sometimes my own snoring wakes me up, which can be embarrassing at times!
During my waking hours, I’m a happy-go-lucky kind of koala. I just love to be by the water, whether it’s a river or the beach, it’s always great for people watching! Obviously I don’t go in as I like to take good care of my fur. I tend to keep it extra fluffy and soft with special animal wash. Like most animals, I require a little grooming from time to time, particularly my fluffy ears which can get a bit unruly! It’s not something I discuss too much with other koalas, but I actually really do enjoy a little paw pampering too.
I’ve also started to practice a version of koala Pilates called Kolates, it’s an adaption of your more mainstream Pilates, which takes into account our small hind legs. This really builds strength for climbing trees.
Being a travelling koala, I do miss my friends and family but it’s great keeping them up-to-date with a quick pic on Instagram to let them know my latest location. I guess it’s a bit of a shame my arms aren’t long enough to take selfies, as I tend to cut off half my ears in many photos… sometimes I need help from a human as their arms are much longer.
That pretty much sums me up folks. Follow my adventure as I travel Australia and find new friends, discover local food and set to work on being Australia’s most adventurous little Koala!
Lots of love,
From Friday 2 October until Friday 16 October 2015, Baz explored the local neighbourhoods of Hyatt hotels in Australia and shared the best kept secrets that only locals would know.
